I had the honor of being commissioned to create a painting for El Festival Español de Nueva Iberia. A festival that celebrates and promotes the Spanish ancestry and culture in New Iberia and Louisiana. I’m a genetic mutt with hints of blood from many European ancestors including Spanish so I needed to get it right.
I wanted to somehow depict the connection of the past and the present. My creative goal was overpowered by images of the beautiful dark haired women that the word Spain brings to my mind. So, I concocted the idea that the central female guitarist represents the mother and the dancers represent her children. Through her music she shares her wisdom; inspiring future generations to remember the traditions of the past while celebrating and living fully in the present.
